5 Steps to Become More Outdoorsy

5 Ways to become more outdoorsy

Some people are naturally “outdoorsy.” You know these people (maybe you are these people!), who casually mention the hikes they’ve been on, epic places they have camped, and peaks they have recently summited. All around, these people seem pretty awesome and on a whole other level when it comes to the outdoors.

For those of us (myself included) who would not naturally describe themselves as “outdoorsy”, there is still hope! You can enjoy the wonders of the outdoors and even hang with the outdoorsy cool kids. If I can do it, so can you. Here are 5 steps to become more outdoorsy.

Lean In!

Just lean into becoming outdoorsy

So, you’re ready and pumped to become more outdoorsy! But… where do you begin?

Start with what feels good and comfortable. You want to give yourself a quick win to keep up your motivation.

An easy place to start is walking outside. If you normally go to a gym, go to a park instead, preferably one with nature trails. This will ease you into being outside more and give you a foundation that you can build on with the next steps. If you already do this, you are well on your way!

Here are some more ideas of easy ways to get outside:

  • Relax outside in a hammock or chair
  • Have a picnic at the park
  • Go fruit picking (it’s more activity than you might imagine!)
  • Play any kind of outdoor game/activity

Take baby steps

Take baby steps to become more outdoorsy

Now that you’ve started spending more time outside, think of some baby steps that would take it to the next level. What is your ultimate goal with becoming more outdoorsy? Do you want to go on hikes? Do you want to go camping in a tent or RV? Once you know where you want to go, you can break your goal down into baby steps to create a plan.

For example, say you want to go on longer hikes without feeling winded, tired, and whiney. You can prepare for this by:

  • Choosing a hiking goal: Easily complete a 5-mile hike
  • Increasing the distance you walk each time you exercise:
    • 1 mile 3x/week
    • 2 miles 3x/week
    • 3 miles 3x/week
    • 4 miles 3x/week
    • 5 miles 3x/week

Get the Right Gear

When you have your plan in place, you need to stock up on the right gear. Even if you can physically hike for 5 miles without getting winded, you won’t reach your destination with the wrong kind of footwear. Getting a pair of hiking shoes will not only support your feet and your hiking goal, but will also make you look the part of being super outdoorsy. When you look outdoorsy, you’ll feel outdoorsy!

Do some research on what you need for your outdoorsy aspirations. Do you need a hiking backpack, camping gear, or a paddle board? Conveniently, we have all of these things here on our website!

Push Your Comfort Zones

Push your comfort zones to become more outdoorsy

As you reach your outdoorsy goals, you’re going to build up your comfort zone with outdoor activities. At this stage, it’s time to push those comfort zones even further. This is the time where you sign up for that outdoor rock climbing class or a kayaking excursion you’ve had your eye on. Maybe you’ll even go on a solo camping trip! Whatever seems exciting to you. Do something that is just outside of your current comfort zone, but would give you that feeling of really being outdoorsy.

Enjoy Your Progress

Every step of the way on your journey to becoming more outdoorsy, give yourself some major props for your progress! Enjoy each step, write down your progress, take pictures, and look back to see how far you’ve come. Before, you were idolizing friends and strangers on Instagram who lived epic outdoorsy lifestyles. Now, you are well on your way to having your own outdoorsy persona and adventures.

Remember to stay humble and not look down on those who are far less outdoorsy than you. You too were a beginner once (a few minutes ago when you started reading this blog post). You’ve come so far, my outdoorsy friend. Enjoy your progress and the great outdoors.
